{"id":261,"date":"2023-11-27T15:58:52","date_gmt":"2023-11-27T15:58:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.multichainmedia.xyz\/?p=261"},"modified":"2023-11-27T15:58:53","modified_gmt":"2023-11-27T15:58:53","slug":"nfts-on-the-xrpl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.multichainmedia.xyz\/index.php\/2023\/11\/27\/nfts-on-the-xrpl\/","title":{"rendered":"NFTs on the XRPL"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The XRPL has been the leader in blockchain payments, but is gradually emerging in other areas such as DeFi and NFTs. These changes are coming quickly, and future additions such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lachlanalextodd\/status\/1701996710535496095\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">EVM sidechain<\/span><\/a> will only accelerate the development of new initiatives. Now, the NFT community is also starting to grow; as of October 2023, over <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.binance.com\/en\/feed\/post\/1570540\">3M NFTs have been minted<\/a> on the XRPL<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This piece will take a closer look at XRPL NFTs, which have a fundamentally different design than Ethereum or others. For one, they\u2019re built <em>into the network itself.<\/em> Other key characteristics include low-fees, higher security, automatic royalties, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll also be covering the XLS-20 NFT Standard, adoption, and existing NFT Marketplaces on the XRPL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The XLS-20 NFT Standard<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was originally an <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/XRPLF\/XRPL-Standards\/discussions\/30\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">XLS-14d<\/span><\/a> proposal that dictated the issuance of a unique XRPL token that would represent NFTs. It was to be a tiny fraction of a fungible token (that couldn\u2019t be divided any further) that possessed non-fungible attributes. This design ultimately led to issues on the XRPL DEX (such as rounding errors) and the XLS-14d proposal has not been carried forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The XLS-20 standard was then introduced and has taken a different approach, creating an entirely separate token type called <em>NFToken<\/em>. This initially required changes to the underlying XRPL system but this has been completed, and developers have been able to access essential NFT functionalities like minting, trading, burning, etc. since October 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some features include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Protocol Native: <\/strong>low fees, and no smart contract risk (unlike deploying NFTs as contracts on top of a network). This also means that a developer could use Javascript and Python libraries to access APIs for building an NFT dApp, without learning Solidity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Automatic Royalties:<\/strong> while platforms like OpenSea can bypass royalties, on the XRPL they\u2019re enforced.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trading \/ Minting \/ Burning:<\/strong> similar to other networks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Authorized Minter: <\/strong>you can choose another party to mint NFTs and run day-to-day operations, while you remain the NFT owner and continue to earn royalties.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-us.googleusercontent.com\/Yq6Hu1ThhBxEeyLPuN9KowdjuOw8Afvwy7brhzQaGqL2jFeyPkni67m3NoP4bcgKtoQNufNzj0MuTrVRA1FHzKPKlswS_3Otl_Ac2W_2UsLG6gaSUdawpp1iNEA7rtFsbGKH1Cn-Axx6SBKVnC7cy3g\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:837px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Adoption Challenges<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A challenge has been that many XRP holders believe that XRP is only for Ripple, rather than for the XRPL network as a whole. While many XRP holders may hold NFTs elsewhere, on XRPL they\u2019re nascent. Many of the existing projects are also only known within the XRPL community which poses a challenge in terms of getting them on the broad crypto stage. This is a challenge for the community as a whole and a potential opportunity for early innovators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What can help this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One is partnerships. Famous car brand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ducati.com\/ww\/en\/home\">Ducati<\/a> announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblock.co\/post\/241285\/ducati-digital-collectible-xrp-ledger\">a digital collection<\/a> on the XRPL which helped bring visibility. Given the XRPL brand\u2019s recognition and reach, hopefully, other mainstream attention can be brought to the space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another thing that can help is advocacy &#8211; those in the XRPL community helping to bring attention to what\u2019s going on, whether it be NFTs, DeFi, or anything else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I expect that as the market rebounds as a whole moving into 2024, this will help bring attention over to the XRPL\u2019s NFT community. The benefit is that the Ripple brand already has a huge following, so it\u2019s much easier to shift eyes to the XRPL than it otherwise would be for a brand new ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at two marketplaces helping to bring forward adoption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/xrp.cafe\/\"><strong>XRPCafe<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>XRP Cafe won a grant in January 2023 as part of the XRPL\u2019s Wave 4 grants program, and have been swiftly building. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Vet_X0\">Vet<\/a> on their team is particularly active in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From speaking with community members, it sounds like the UX and UI is especially great, and they have features like bulk listings and wallet integrations. They also have an especially strong presence in Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on on-chain data from both <a href=\"https:\/\/bithomp.com\/nft-volumes?list=marketplaces&amp;period=all\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Bithomp<\/span><\/a> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dappradar.com\/rankings\/protocol\/xrpl\/category\/marketplaces?range=30d\">dAppRadar<\/a>,<\/span> it appears that they lead in <em>recent<\/em> NFT marketplace sales (~80%), but not in <em>all-time<\/em> sales. This might signal growing traction in recent times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the most popular projects in the past month include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerpmon.world\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Zerpmon<\/span><\/a>: a creature collecting and battling game on the XRPL. It reminds me of Pokemon of sorts, and is focused on being easy to play.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/x-apes.com\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Bored Apes XRPL Club:<\/span><\/a> an XRPL version of BAYC. They also created <a href=\"https:\/\/x-apes.com\/#:~:text=Next-,HOGs,-HOGs%20are%20an\">HOGs<\/a>, which are ranked #3 for monthly volume.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/xrp.cafe\/collection\/celestialspirits\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Celestial Spirits:<\/span><\/a> created by <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/moon-studios.io\/\">Moon Studios<\/a><\/span> but without much context.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-us.googleusercontent.com\/TkYZn6KGmiw0HF3JE-KFTFoIkERRDUx7SXy-cUW6pNacCvAm-URwirbmwEXKRcwchzpDHXyUy0K5BAQkLb0ZT4IE8opouEjuQPWrCELBwBj_AlLx_8PiDHBdF0Ki5Mz-fhWLWjhH8Pu-IBsy15hjUYo\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:674px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/xrp.cafe\/stats\"><em>Source: XRPCafe<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/onxrp.com\/\"><strong>OnXRP<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OnXRP is another XRPL NFT marketplace that has been around since the Devnet launch back in late 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their users also have commented on their good UI\/UX, but whereas xrpcafe has a strong presence in Asia, I\u2019ve been told that OnXRP has a greater presence in North America and EMEA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their top projects include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nft.onxrp.com\/collection\/rPeRQQ8kaMej5b1E7tjkwFPm2xMFQofkdG-0\/\">CryptoLand<\/a>:<\/span> a Play-to-Earn gaming community on the XRPL<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/nft.onxrp.com\/collection\/xpunks\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">XPunks<\/span><\/a>: an XRPL version of the popular cryptopunks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/nft.onxrp.com\/collection\/xpunks\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Unixpunks<\/span><\/a>: similar to cryptopunks, but unicorn-themed with 4727 total.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And then both Bored Apes XRP Club and HOGs are also top-5 on their marketplace as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-us.googleusercontent.com\/oEyZYfrbJwLYpaoEv3uG1fBg006Isei94H0maqKB3WW3Kc2HtzocFU4cWbO1Nf7p9Zjuag7J8gkJHdLa-SBZBIxGuMxe4ghs5Uz9-ly_bhdSUlbQQr4huGuG3U_SI755XDV5lktlYZYguNrDtXgnHDU\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:582px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/onxrp.com\/\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Source: onXRP<\/span><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-us.googleusercontent.com\/L8W6JmcB1Lh0DcFzO6NK0EIsG9zeniuKQGb7yq3saKmxgzIWVMUsGMklCw-a1iwi4ExbEGtAn76gUk-YgLZyVG7ysJ2sxQX0xmRDoY9FUoAd2pRy2lGYlHZ_ydHrLryah35P3alNx2R0bTMRghKw-f4\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:799px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thoughts<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the record, I\u2019m more of a DeFi person and not as familiar with the NFT world, but here are my thoughts. It seems that despite some imitations of mainstream NFT projects like CryptoPunks, they\u2019ve also been able to get new projects building on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some noteworthy projects I\u2019ve been told about include<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/xrp.cafe\/collection\/lfgo\">Lets Effing Go<\/a>:<\/span> customizable NFTs on the blockchain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/xrp.cafe\/collection\/birdjpg\">BirdJPG<\/a>:<\/span> the second NFT minted on the XRPL.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-post-featured-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1672\" height=\"942\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.multichainmedia.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Screen-Shot-2023-11-27-at-6.40.20-PM.png\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" style=\"object-fit:cover;\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.multichainmedia.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Screen-Shot-2023-11-27-at-6.40.20-PM.png 1672w, https:\/\/blog.multichainmedia.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Screen-Shot-2023-11-27-at-6.40.20-PM-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.multichainmedia.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Screen-Shot-2023-11-27-at-6.40.20-PM-1024x577.png 1024w, https:\/\/blog.multichainmedia.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Screen-Shot-2023-11-27-at-6.40.20-PM-768x433.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.multichainmedia.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Screen-Shot-2023-11-27-at-6.40.20-PM-1536x865.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1672px) 100vw, 1672px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>The XRPL NFT community has been very active on Twitter and I wouldn\u2019t be surprised to see big growth in 2024. For now, it should be a matter of getting new projects building and greater attention on the space &#8211; as Ethereum continues to dominate the NFT space, but is not necessarily the only nor best ecosystem out there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In conclusion, the XLS-20 standard has various unique properties such as enforced royalties and blockchain-level implementation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s been solid growth throughout 2023, and hopefully community adoption, advocacy, and mainstream partnerships can help further bolster NFT adoption on the XRPL.
